What is a cause and effect diagram?

A cause and effect diagram is also known as an Ishikawa diagram, after its creator, Kaoru Ishikawa. He was an engineer and businessman who developed the cause and effect diagram to help locate contributors to problems in a business. Each node contains an overarching Cause topic, with needles projecting from the spine along which specific problems are written. These items can then have lines attached underneath, representing secondary causes. Fishbone diagrams have been used to approach problems minor and major: the international car company, Mazda, used one in designing the Miata.

When working from a Lucidchart template, it’s easy to customize it to make it truly your own. When you open this template, you can select all the shapes by hitting Ctrl (Cmd) + A. In the Graphics panel, accessible from the right-side dock, you can easily change the color scheme of all your shapes—or just one! This marketing cause and effect diagram uses a sans serif font: use the top toolbar to change to a sans serif font, if desired. Don’t think one of the causes is affecting your business right now?
