Pillars of 5S
The five pillars of 5S are Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. Each of these pillars should be used in order to review a production facility or other work area. Start with Sort, which encourages workers to eliminate nonessential items from the workplace. The next steps have you put everything in the right place, clean up all surfaces, and set best practices.
Using 5S in Lucidchart
A chart like the one linked above helps you give a score to each of the five required S’s. You should go through them one by one, beginning with red tagging to "Sort" items, and ending with making documentation to "Sustain" the changes you’ve implemented. Lucidchart can help with this last step too—you can make flowchart posters easily to hang in your facilities.
More lean manufacturing
5S is one of the foundational methodologies in lean manufacturing because it mandates physical clean-up of your work area. However, there are other lean manufacturing methods that can also help you problem solve and cut down on waste. With Lucidchart’s intuitive technology, you can make root cause analysis diagrams, Hoshin Kanri matrices, and much more.
