What are swimlanes?
Swimlanes are a tool for outlining tasks in a process. Perhaps the best way to describe a swimlane diagram is that it’s a flowchart or activity diagram that’s surrounded by a container which divides various steps in a process into lanes. Each lane corresponds to a team or individual that takes some action along the way, and is labeled accordingly.
The template below illustrates a swimlane according to these principles. You can see that a standard flowchart has been contained and divided by lanes. To edit this example template for your own purposes, simply label each lane, and then map out the steps of your process. If you need to add more steps or lanes, just click on the appropriate shape and you will be prompted to expand your diagram.
