Using swimlanes in Microsoft Word
Swimlanes can be used in all kinds of settings, from business to education. Swimlane shapes are considered containers: they organize the phases of a given process and make it clear who’s responsible for each task. Conversely, swimlanes can reveal which inefficiencies (or inefficient individuals) are halting progress. The template below highlights a swimlane within an ordering process. Like most swimlanes with customer-facing sequences, it begins with an action by a customer. After that point, every step that’s taken will alter the natural course of events. Remember—in a vertical diagram like this one, the flow of action moves from left to right and top to bottom.
It’s easy to edit this template by clicking it and signing up for a free trial. Edits can then be saved, and the entire document downloaded as an image. If you’re adding the diagram to a Word doc, you’ll want to choose either a PNG or JPG file type. Adding and subtracting shapes from the canvas is simple, as is switching up colors or other design elements.
