Org charts are useful tools for a wide range of organizations. However, it takes time to build them and they can be cumbersome to update. With Lucidchart’s Import Wizard for Org Chart’s, we make it easy to create and update your company’s org chart. First open the templates manager on the Documents page by clicking More Templates in the banner near the top of the page. Under categories select Org Chart. Notice the Guide to Org Chart Import here, this file can walk you through importing if you need any help. But to create a new chart, you can choose a template or click Blank Org Chart. Once in the document, you’ll notice the Org Chart shapes in the toolbox on your left. Here, click Import Data. Here you can download an example .CSV if you need to. This is a great way to get started. You can have as much or as little information as you need but you’ll at least need the names of people in your chart and a field to help determine who they report to, either the Supervisor’s ID or their name. When you have a file that is ready, click choose file and then select the file you’d like to upload. Then click Next. Now, we’ll connect our employees to their supervisors. Here select how you chose to identify a supervisor, by their ID or their name. The file I selected uses their name. Then select while fields contain the name or ID you need and the field where the Supervisor ID or name is located. You can also indicated if the first and last name fields are separate. For this file we’ll have both names in the same field, so the employee ID will be the Name field. And the Supervisor’s name will be located in the Manager field. Once your relationships are properly set up, click next. Now we just need to map the rest of our fields to make sure our org chart populates correctly. Remember, the fields here are taken from your .CSV. We’ll automatically map fields if we can but if not you’ll need to manually map them. Here I’ll need to select the Role, which is our Title field and for Image URL we’ll use the Photo URL field. You can add new fields if you need to as well and when your fields are all mapped just click Next. Finally you can determine if you want to have one big org chart or if you want to split people up into smaller org charts based on their role or supervisor. This can be a super helpful tool if you have a very large organization. To just populate one chart, just don’t select any options here and when you’re ready click Finish. Voila! A Fully formed org chart. As you can see, this makes it simple and easy to edit and update your org charts without having to build all the info completely from scratch. Lucidchart helps you get back to work faster by saving you time and helping you import your org chart in just a few simple clicks.
