You can automatically create UML sequence diagrams by typing your markup directly in Lucidchart.

To start, open the shape manager by clicking on the “shape” button in the top left corner of the Lucidchart editor. Then, navigate down to the UML library. You’ll notice that there are several libraries available, like shapes for UML class diagrams or deployment diagrams. You can activate all of these libraries in Lucidchart by selecting the checkmark next to UML, or you can select an individual sub-library by clicking the drop-down next to UML and selecting your preferred shape set.

For this tutorial, we’ll select only the UML Sequence Library. Once the UML sequence library has been added to our toolbox, we have the option to select the “Use Markup” button beneath the shapes.

Once you click the button, the toolbox is replaced with a panel where you can type your markup to create your diagram. I’ve already completed this step in a text editor, so I’ll simply copy and paste the text into Lucidchart.

Now that I have my markup in Lucidchart, I can click the “build” button in the top right corner of the panel and Lucidchart will automatically create my diagram.

If there’s anything I want to change or add to my diagram, I can either drag and drop additional shapes to the canvas or edit the markup to make changes made in my diagram.

As you can see, Lucidchart gives you options for diagramming in your preferred style, whether it’s typing out markup or dragging and dropping shapes onto the canvas. You can save time while creating clear diagrams, easily edit your work, and then share it with others, by using Lucidchart.
