What does an analytics internship look like at Lucid?

Every summer, on the strategy & analytics team here at Lucid, we invite a handful of interns to join us and learn how to become impact-driven data analysts. Recently, we asked a few of our interns what they liked about the internship experience, and are excited to share their responses with you! Here are Jason’s, Nanyan’s, and Mac’s responses to those questions.  

What was your favorite part of your internship? 

Jason: During my internship, my favorite part was the collaborative environment at Lucid. The entire S&A team at Lucid was incredibly supportive, and I was constantly learning from them. It wasn’t just about data analysis but understanding the broader business implications of the insights we derived. Plus, the opportunity to work on real-world problems and see the impact of my work was truly rewarding.

Nanyan: Definitely getting to work on a sizable strategic project from scoping and framing to analysis and storytelling. Also, developing a general understanding of how a SaaS business functions. 

Mac: My favorite part of the internship was the opportunity to work on high-impact projects and take ownership of some key pieces. There were some moments when I felt like I was in over my head, but because of the team’s support and willingness to teach me, I could find solutions to these challenges. I am really grateful for all I learned during my time at Lucid.

What skills did you use/learn in your internship?

Jason: During the internship, I developed practical data analysis skills, such as SQL for data wrangling and Tableau for visualization, which built upon and surpassed the foundational knowledge I learned from classes. Additionally, I cultivated a keen sense for effective communication, essential for translating complex data insights into actionable business strategies—something that was also not frequently touched upon in courses. This internship provided a comprehensive skill set that extended beyond the theoretical approaches emphasized in educational curricula.

Nanyan: The biggest one was probably how to approach & frame problems—it’s almost an abstract skill, but the S&A onboarding taught it very well. 

Mac: My internship helped me improve both my hard and soft skills. My ability to use SQL, Tableau, and other tools to help solve problems and drive impact grew significantly. In addition to those skills, my time at Lucid helped me learn the best ways to communicate ideas to others, manage my workload, and define ambiguous problems.

What tips would you give someone interested in getting an internship on the S&A team at Lucid?

Jason: Don’t worry if you’re not a master of technical tools just yet. We’re flexible when it comes to the technical expertise of our candidates. We can build on that as long as you have a foundational understanding of a data manipulation tool. Our robust learning and onboarding program can teach you the rest. Always be curious and inquisitive. Ask why and strive to understand the bigger picture of any problem you’re working on. Don’t be shy or embarrassed to ask questions; Lucidites are friendly and helpful.

Nanyan: Take an interest in understanding how data drives impact in a business. Be very curious and take initiative before, during, and even after your internship. 

Mac: I recommend taking a class or using online resources to build at least a foundational knowledge of SQL. While coding isn’t the only important aspect of this internship, or even the most important part for that matter, having a strong foundation will help you hit the ground running. If you are able to effectively design and write queries, you will be able to spend more time and energy focused on defining problems and crafting actionable, impact-oriented solutions.

What was something that surprised you about your internship experience?

Jason: One of the surprising aspects was the level of trust and responsibility given to interns. I was initially expecting to work on small side projects, but I was entrusted with significant tasks that directly impacted business decisions. With the support of my manager, I had the chance to lead an analytics project where I was responsible for analyzing user pull-through monitoring trends.

Nanyan: The fully-fledged onboarding boot camp! Also, S&A really made remote work rewarding—incredible culture and team building!

Mac: One thing that surprised me about my experience was how much the team likes to have fun together. Working with a group of smart, accomplished people can be intimidating at first, but the team does a great job prioritizing positive culture. From board games to Foosball to meme analysis, S&A knows how to enjoy themselves at work.
